Did you wake up one day and decide, “Hey. I am going to be fat!” I didn’t, and I don’t think you did. For most people, weight gain is a slow process that takes decades. In general, we gain from one to three pounds per year. Over time the weight adds up, and we go from a bit overweight – to overweight – to obese.
Obese. Such an awful word and so miss understood. If you are overweight, you have to realize that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. The problem starts with a hormone called insulin. Insulin is the life insurance hormone. It prevents you from starving to death if there is no food to eat. Like from the 3 o’clock break to dinnertime. Today starvation is not much of a problem, but historically humans often had to go days or even weeks with eating. Insulin to the rescue. During times of plenty, insulin stimulates special cells to absorb carbs from the blood. These cells then produce fat. This fat store is then available to carry us through periods of food shortages.
So, being overweight is a hormonal problem. It is not simply the abundance of food. Nor is it a problem of calories in – calories out. Many medical and dietary professionals still believe it is when they advise their patients to “Eat less and exercise more.” Quick, easy, pay your bill on the way out. Ask yourself, “If eat less and exercise more is such great advice, then why are there fat doctors? Fat nurses?” The answer is that for 99.5% of us, this approach does not work. Not only does it not work, but there are a great many scientific studies that prove it does not work!
