Back to the Future, Deloreans, and Diet

Dr. Emmett Brown was the inventor of time travel, well, in the movies anyway. So, what would our ancestors look like if we could catch a ride in Doc Brown’s Delorean and time travel back to 1955? If we land in Des Plaines, Illinois, we could visit Ray Kroc’s first McDonald’s or watch the first Mickey Mouse Club, and if we are in Stockton, CA, we could watch the MMC on the 100th commercial television station in the USA.

The other thing we would probably notice is how much slimmer everyone is; according to the United States Center for Disease Control, the rate of obesity in the 1950s was less than 13 percent of the population. In 2018 the number had risen to 42.4% of the population, with severe obesity reaching 9.2%. The CDC also reported that today, Obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer are among the leading causes of premature death.

So Why?

What were people doing in the 1950s and 60s to stay slim? Some point to labor-saving devices and other changes in workplaces and homes. But the real reason was Fasting, Time, and Diet.

Fasting – No in-between meal snacks. No sitting in front of the tv munching candy and highly processed foods.

Time – Most people fasted about 12 to 14 hours per day. This fasting was not intentional, but with no snacks in the evening and a good night of sleep, these folks were fasting at least 12 hours a day. Every day!

Diet – People often raised their food in gardens and orchards. They ate far more whole fresh foods than today and far less processed and sugary foods.

So take a trip back – eat fewer processed foods and less sugary sweets and add fasting to your lifestyle. Like magic, you’re living like your grandparents or great grandparents; it’s kinda’ like time travel!

The bottom line is that today medical problems related to obesity are the leading cause of death and take more lives than Covid and other infectious diseases. Obesity is the number one health concern in the USA today, making it the most common, serious, and most costly of all diseases.

Quick Review – If we could time travel back to the 50s or 60s, we would find a much slimmer America.

           – Today, obesity is the most common disease we face.

           – Its consequences are heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, some types of cancer, and other inflammatory diseases.

           – Obesity is the number one killer of this century.

Regular Features

Food for Thought – Bouillon or broth buster. Do you get so hungry by lunch that you can’t keep your fast going? Please don’t feel bad. We have all been there. One excellent option is to have a cup of hot bouillon or broth with a small handful of tree nuts. These foods will help control your hunger, help you through your fast, and not trigger significant insulin releases.

Trouble Shooting – End your meal before your meal is over. Your body can tell you to stop eating when you are full; the problem is that we have learned NOT to listen. The good news is that you can relearn to put your fork down when you’re full. Have you ever been eating and suddenly needed to take a deep breath? Your body is trying to tell you to put your folk down. It is okay to leave food on your plate. Remember, the food left on your plate is food not going to your waist.
