Fasting is not for kids, and most healthcare professionals discourage fasting for young children.
Many people feel motivated to try and lose some weight in the spring. In addition, many religions recommend fasting in the spring for spiritual renewal. Kids are trying so hard to be adults, and when they see their parents fasting, they naturally think it must be a good thing and want to join in. If you see this happening, take a few minutes to chat with them and explain that growing bodies need good nutrition while adults have different needs. You may be surprised at how well they understand what you are trying to say!
As parents, we always look for ways to ensure that our kids eat healthy, nutritious food. This is a golden opportunity to provide some nutritional guidance for them. Suggest that, instead of fasting, a good alternative for them is to give up highly processed foods or fast foods during the religious celebration in favor of healthy, fresh options.
Take them on a special grocery shopping trip just for them. Let them choose some healthy snacks and take the opportunity to show them the labels and what ingredients to avoid, such as sugar or corn sweeteners. Use this opportunity to communicate to them the importance of limiting between-meal snacks. Make sure healthy snacks are available, such as a bowl of fruit or small packages of tree nuts sitting out on the counter when they come home from school. Encourage healthy treats over sugar-filled junk food.

Answer to the Q&A: No. Extreme diets can be unhealthy and unsustainable because they involve severe calorie restrictions. Most people who try them see temporary results but find it hard to stay motivated. Fasting and diets in moderation are the keys to weight loss and a lifetime of improved health.
