Your Guide to a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is synonymous with sugar-laden treats. From candies and gummy worms to caramel apples and other sweet treats, there are plenty of sugary goods to go around.

Spooky Toast

Who says Halloween treats must be sweet? This year, surprise your trick-or-treaters with some spooky, savory toast.

Cut thick slices of a French baguette and toast them. Once the bread is nice and crisp, slather on a layer of cream cheese or your choice of savory spread on each slice. To create a “spooky” effect, slice some black olives into halves and place one half on each toast to make it look like the body of a spider. Thinly slice some more black olives to create the spider’s legs. Sprinkle some paprika and finely chopped basil on top to complete the look.

Banana Popsicles

Bananas are among the most versatile fruits. You can use them for various desserts, breakfast foods, and snacks, including Halloween treats.

This year, give banana popsicles a shot. Start by cutting the fruit in four quarters lengthwise and inserting a popsicle stick at each section’s wider end. Line up your banana popsicles on parchment paper and freeze them overnight for up to 24 hours. Once they’re frozen, add your choice of topping to give them a burst of flavor.

For instance, you can dip them in melted dark chocolate or drizzle some locally sourced honey to give them a touch of sweetness. Place your frozen bananas back in the freezer for a few more hours for the topping to set before serving them as treats.

Put away those bags of potato chips and make your own nutritious snacks by toasting some apples. Start by thinly slicing apples with a mandolin slicer or a super-sharp knife. Once you’ve accumulated your “apple chips”, remove the seeds and line them up on a baking sheet. Sprinkle a generous amount of lemon juice and cinnamon, and bake the apple slices for approximately two hours or until the chips are dehydrated.

Pro-tip: flip the slices halfway and re-sprinkle cinnamon and lemon juice to ensure the flavor seeps in at both sides. You’re going to love the apple pie aroma that fills up your kitchen as you bake these nutritious snacks. The best part? No additional salt or sugar required!
