Many people have found that fasting alone is adequate to lose weight. I should probably say many “lucky people.” My father was one of the lucky few who was slim and trim all of his life. He knew the secret to staying fit without fuss. Just what his secret was, I have no idea. He always ate whatever he wanted and never seemed to gain a pound. I do know he was a member of the generation who only ate three meals a day, NO snacks. I am sure that was the key to his success.
The next group is the people who can fast for one or two days a week and achieve success. Hooray for this team!
And now for the rest of us.
For the rest of us, fasting alone may not be enough. We are the ones who are going to have to work a little harder to achieve our ideal weight. We must remember that we are all individuals. We are all different. The diet that worked for your sister, brother, friend or cousin, may not work for you. Today, science tells us our genes play a role in which diet is most effective for each one of us. So, based on modern gene theory, there are three primary groups of people.
- The people who do well on low carb diets.
- The people who do well on low fat diets.
- The people who do well on low protein diets.
There are also combinations of the three groups. Some of us may find that we do the best on a combination of low carb with low fat. For others, it may be a combination of low fat with low protein. You can have your genetic preferences tested, but it is costly. The good news is that you can figure it out for yourself by trying different combinations and recording the results. To determine your best fasting and diet plan think back over your dietary history. Try to remember the one diet that worked best for you. Low carb, low fat, low protein, keto, which one did you find performed the best for you? Within a few months, you will determine the best approach for you by combining your ideal diet and ideal fasting times to reach your goal.
When I first started fasting for weight loss, I lost four pounds in the first month with fasting alone. Then I hit a plateau and had to up my game. I knew from experience that I did the best on a low-carb diet. It was the diet that worked for me. I have used the combination of intermittent fasting and low-carb meals to drop 25 pounds over the last eight months.
