Why was there no obesity crisis in the 1950s, 60s, 70s??? Part 1

So, what did they do to stay so slim???

Why are so many of us fighting the battle of the bulge

Insulin is the life insurance hormone.  It prevents you from starving to death if there is no food to eat.

Let’s take a deep look at how insulin and the hunger cycle works.

We will start with a 24 hour fast.  I have done it, and I do not suggest that this is what you should be doing.  However, it is a great way to learn about the hunger cycle and its relation to dieting and weight gain vs. weight loss.

This chart is from “What is the Best Fast Length? (Fasting Basics 3)  with Dr. Jason Fung, MD. After eating it takes about 12 hours for the insulin to be completely used up in the blood. During these 12 hours, the body is actively producing fat. Once the insulin is gone the body switches to fat-burning as its primary fuel source. What we all need to be doing is making sure we have the right number of fat-burning hours every day.
Ghrelin is the primary hunger hormone. The 24 hour fast clearly shows that this hormone is released in cycles or waves. When your stomach is growling and you feel hungry then ghrelin is being released and is near peak levels.
“When your stomach is growlin’ your ghrelin is swellin’.”
If you do not eat then ghrelin levels naturally fall and you no longer feel hungry. In other words, you do not continue to feel hungry all day long. As ghrelin levels rise and fall your hunger comes and goes like the waves on the ocean.
The original fat-burning graph is by Dr. Jason Fung.  I added the insulin and ghrelin leveled to his graph – JP

The modern SAD diet – doing it wrong.  Eating 3 meals and day and constantly snacking.  The chart above clearly shows that, if you are eating a SAD (Standard American Diet) then your body never uses up all of its insulin then it never gets into the fat-burning phase. No fat-burning – no weight loss.
There was no obesity crisis in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.  Three meals a day – no snacks. Note the very right side of this chart. The green area represents the time they were burning fat. This chart also shows that during the day insulin levels dropped to much lower levels than in the modern SAD.
